Eastern Sicily

With a surface area 35 times larger than New York City - and almost half of the population - Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean, the largest region of Italy and records over 1000km of coastline and the tallest active volcano in Europe, mount Etna with its 3300mt. Also called “Trinacria” for its triangular shape, Sicily detached from the boot of Italy 600,000 years ago after a series of violent earthquakes, and things never looked the same again ;-). Despite some never-ending talks about connecting the island to the mainland - whilst Sicily being undeniably Italian - people, food and culture are proudly and stubbornly apart from the continent. Sicily’s overwhelming range of textures, tastes and experiences attracted foreigners for centuries, challenged populations and empires, survived invasions and ultimately transformed the people before they could change the island.
